Programme Note
The Remedy (健忆舒心茶) is a re-scoring of an animated film by Zilai Feng, originally created as her graduation project at the California Institute of the Arts. The film moves between three intertwined worlds: the protagonist’s present life as a Chinese medicine practitioner, a childhood memory of accidentally swallowing a flower sticker, and an increasingly surreal inner world where memory, body, and imagination merge.
My score treats recurring objects—flower stickers, herbs, cups, water, doors, and flickering lights—as musical memory triggers. Rather than continuously accompanying the image, the music emerges selectively, building connections between visual gestures, objects, and different layers of time. Drawing on sounds associated with Guangdong, childhood memory, plucked strings, and electronics, the score gradually transforms familiar materials into something unstable and dreamlike. Like the “remedy” in the film, the music becomes a process of recalling, digesting, and reinterpreting the past.
