The Typewriter Tune, for solo violin, which was premiered at the Présences Festival in 2004 by Hae-Sun Kang, Giorgos Koumendakis follows the trail of the “anonymous” creators of folk songs, “rearranging or recomposing traditional musical themes, while preserving their energy and elegance, the authenticity of their primordial model, their beat and soul”. The work forms part of a wider cycle named Typewriter Tunes, each addressed to a particular recipient, and is inspired by serra, the Pontic Greek war dance. The violin takes over the part of the Pontic lyre and is “addressed” to Iannis Xenakis.

Some composers create in silence, for lack of support. We want to give them a free space to express themselves Because our initiative is not just an artistic event - it's a social, political and deeply human act.
