This web page serves as the Second Circular for the Third International Maar Conference, to be held in Malargüe, Argentina, April 14-17, 2009.  It has information on the scientific programme, schedule and venue, fees and registration, excursions and general information. More details on various aspects of the scientific programme, field trips, etc. will be added when available.

Introduction and Invitation

Dear Colleagues and Friends:
The Organizing Committee, in collaboration with and under the sponsorship of the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth's Interior (IAVCEI), and supported by additional sponsors, will host the Third International Maar Conference.
On behalf of the hosting Argentine geological community, we warmly invite you to participate in this conference, to be held in Malargüe, Mendoza Province, Argentina, from 14 to 17 April, 2009.
Argentina is a country with superb geology, famous not only because of the wonderful volcanic scenery of the Andes, but also because of its friendly and warm people, amazing landscapes, delicious food (famous Argentine asado and Mendoza's goats) and well known wines from vineyards located on volcanic soils.
It is a country that once you visit you will want to return to again and again.
The extraordinary Andean volcano diversity has inspired volcanologists from around the world to write an enormous amount of classical papers on almost all the disciplines of volcanology and chemistry of these igneous rocks. The Llancanello Volcanic Field, together with the nearby Payun Matru Field in the area around Malargüe, comprise at least 800 scoria cones, tuff cones and tuff rings and voluminous lava fields that cover an extensive back-arc area behind the Andean volcanic chain. The Andes also vary from the lunar-like volcanoes in the extremely arid Puna in the north of Argentina to the youthful and dynamic scenery in the southern Patagonia.
